Addressing the Power Law Problems of ILP Gaming™

First of all, a big shout-out to all of our early adopters! We have been blown away by the response, feedback, and engagement and are stoked about where this journey goes.

One aspect of the arcade that is a known challenge is what we’ve internally referred to as the “power law problem”. Specifically, in a global arcade, there are going to be players who are in the top 1% of players and are consistently better. This pattern is the same in professional sports and professional esports. This can make it challenging for more players to experience the fun, excitement, and monetary incentives that can be associated with Instant Leaderboard Payouts™ and ILP Gaming™.

We’ve heard this feedback consistently since launching the arcade and most recently polled players to get some additional data as well. In light of this feedback, Haste Arcade is planning to deploy some changes over the next couple of months that will begin to address this challenge and feedback.

Leaderboard Resets Will Return on July 1st, 2022

When we first launched the arcade, the leaderboards would reset every day for the lower-paying leaderboards, and weekly, monthly, or longer for the higher-paying boards. We quickly changed this to be a “rolling reset” to ensure that when a player paid their score would last the appropriate length of time instead of being cut off only a few hours later. After a few months, we removed these resets entirely to combat empty leaderboards as we got off the ground. Now that our MAUs (monthly active users) have increased, we will be reintroducing these resets back into the Arcade. Specifically, your score will last for a day, a week, a month, or six months based on the cost of the leaderboard you are playing on and will be included within a ranking until all the following conditions occur:

  • Your score expires AND
  • A new player attempts to place on the leaderboard AND
  • If there are not enough players to fill a board, your score will persist (even if expired) until the board is full.

While we understand this change could potentially frustrate some users, namely those that have put in the proof-of-work and practice to post really high scores, do not fret… 👇👇👇👇

Introducing the “Hall of Fame” Leaderboard

To reward players that are highly engaged, we are rolling out the Haste Arcade Hall of Fame leaderboard. A board for the best players and the most engaged.

This feature will showcase the top players regardless of game or leaderboard (yes even the free practice leaderboard!). It will highlight players who are performing at a high level compared to their peers and they will be rewarded with HST on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis (not yet decided). More details to come on this in terms of how much and when the distributions will occur. This is an added incentive for new and existing players who are doing really well and deserve to be recognized for their proof of work, historical scores, and continued efforts to be at the top of their game.

Remember the whole “Get Good. Get on the board. Get paid.” thing? We’re taking that to a new level. The Hall of Fame board is dedicated to legends of the Haste Arcade and their reward will be great.

Say Hello to “Party Mode” 🎉

Party Mode will enable players to create “private” leaderboards that they can invite other players to that is separate from the global leaderboard. For example, if you have a group of friends who enjoy playing games together, rather than competing against the global leaderboard you can instead only compete against your friends. The payouts, rankings, etc will all work the same way, but the possible set of players will be restricted to invited players. We anticipate many players will enjoy the more close-knit competition of a smaller community and payouts, while still having the option to play against the global leaderboard for a chance to get higher earnings.

In addition to these new incentives, keep in mind HST distributions! Anyone can earn even if they aren’t on a leaderboard by gaining HST with every paid play. We have added more HST utility in the arcade with game collectibles and will continue to add features where HST can be used.
